Muscogee Nation men retracing Trail of Tears journey by bicycle

Two members of the Muscogee Nation are retracing the route their ancestors were forced to make during the removal period.

John Beaver is biking 1,080 miles from Georgia, part of the Muscogee Creek homeland, to Oklahoma. Justin Giles will be filming and blogging the ride, which starts Saturday and is slated to end June 23, The Tulsa World reported.

"While we live here in Oklahoma, we're actually not one of the tribes from Oklahoma and I think that's a necessary story that needs to be told," Beaver told News on 6.

The ride starts at the Ocmulgee Mounds in Georgia. Tribal leaders, including Chief George Tiger, will take part in a commemoration of the Trail of Tears.
