Police chief apologizes to Native former employee over racism

The police chief in Edmonton, Alberta, apologized to a Native woman who quit after she faced racism on the job.

Kathleen Sawdo worked as a civilian employee in the victims services unit. She left after she was told to be "less aboriginal."

"The chief did apologize personally, and that was good," Sawdo told CBC News after meeting with chief Rod Knecht.

Knecht said the police force will participate in mediation sessions with the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
