Landowners from the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona are seeking another vote on a controversial highway project.

The tribe held a referendum in February in which members said they didn't want the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway running through the reservation. But landowners say the existing route would cut through a sacred site and a neighborhood.

So the landowners are gathering signatures for another vote. They hope to reroute the highway in a way that protects the sacred South Mountain while encouraging economic development.
