The Seneca Nation of New York added 55 acres to its reservation to make room for a housing development.

The tribe acquired the property with land claim settlement funds. A federal law requires that the land be placed in restricted fee status by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

“We have hundreds of units of demand for housing for our people, and so this is going to be a great way for us to get going on that,” President Robert Odawi Porter told The Buffalo News.

The tribe received $30 million in land claim settlement funds. Porter wouldn't say much money is left in the account but told the paper: “We have plenty to engage in this kind of purpose.”
