A judge in Montana barred the state from transferring any more bison from Yellowstone National Park to tribes.

The Fort Peck Tribes accepted more than 60 bison from the park. Some of the animals were to be transferred to the Fort Belknap Indian Community but the judge's preliminary injunction blocks any moves for now.

The injunction remains in place until a lawsuit filed by non-Indian ranchers and farmers is resolved. The plaintiffs are worried about the transfer of disease from bison to cattle and potential destruction of property by bison.
