Tamara Stands And Looks Back
RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA –– The privilege of parenting the next generation is the basis of a conference being held in Albuquerque, N.M., on April 30 and May 1. A Sicangu Lakota, Tamara Stands And Looks Back, will be featured as one of the keynote speakers at the Parent Involvement Training V, Look Across The Mountain: “Voices from the Native Community” conference sponsored by Sundance Educational Consulting Inc. of Albuquerque. Scheduled to be held immediately after the Gathering of Nations Powwow, which also takes place in Albuquerque, the conference deals with issues such as cultural competency, special education law and education for the gifted. Stands And Looks Back, a member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe, is a private consultant working in education and solar energy. Her ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life in Native communities. The two-day conference is also slated to feature several leaders from Indian country well versed in Indian education, including Ben Mora, Jemenez Pueblo, and Larry Littlebird, Santo Domingo/Laguna. Christine Becker, president of Sundance Educational Consulting, has been working as a teacher, administrator and consultant in schools for the past forty years. Becker is New Mexico state-certified in both administration and teaching and is also co-owner and manager of Transitions LLC, an Indian-owned consulting firm based in New Mexico. The focus of work for both Sundance Educational Consulting and Transitions is to provide support for schools and the communities they serve in addressing current needs for training and in finding ways to work together more effectively.
