The Obama administration is asking a federal judge to dismiss a federal recognition lawsuit filed by the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

Government attorneys say the tribe has failed to state a claim. But they also say the lawsuit should be transferred to federal court in Connecticut if it continues.

The Clinton administration agreed to recognize the tribe, a decision finalized during the Bush administration. But after opponents in Connecticut appealed, the Bureau of Indian Affairs rescinded the tribe's status.
