Leaders of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Manitoba are seeking improved policies after a three-year-old boy wandered away from a daycare center on the reserve earlier this month.

Stephanie Cochrane's son showed up at her office in the band's government building after walking several hundred feet by himself. "It's a back road, but there are vehicles zooming back and forth all day," Cochrane told The Winnipeg Free Press. "My little guy, he's three. He could have easily been hit."

Daycare centers on reserves are regulated by the federal government. Fisher River leaders are working with the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre to revise their policies, which apparently didn't allow the band to fire the director of the daycare center.
