House subcommittee holds hearing on Pascua Yaqui bill

The House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands held a hearing this morning on H.R.4222, a bill to transfer land to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona.

Chairman Peter Yucupicio testified. He urged the subcommittee to approve the transfer of two 10-acre parcels to the tribe.

"This bill means a great deal to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and its endeavor to improve itself through economic development of its lands," Yucupicio said in his written testimony. "Being able to add the parcels covered by HR 4222 to the Tribe’s golf course would significantly improve the golf course and its chances for economic viability and success.

The parcels are surrounded either by the tribe's reservation or other tribally-owned fee lands. Yucupicio said the tribe would agree to a gaming prohibition, which is currently not a part of the bill.
