Daisy Blackbird, an original Chickasaw enrollee, passes on

Daisy Hawley Blackbird, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, died on Thursday. She was 109.

Blackbird was born on January 18, 1903, when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory. She was an original enrollee on the Dawes Commission Roll and was believed to be the oldest Chickasaw in the state.

“Everybody just falls in love with her when they meet her,” family friend Michelle Jenkins told The Oklahoman. “I think it's because, first of all, there's so much history there.”

In 2001, the Chickasaw Nation recognized Blackbird with a special medal that honored her status as an original enrollee.
