Schools on reservations in Montana see jump in test scores
Posted: Monday, April 9, 2012
Three public schools on reservations in Montana have seen an improvement in their standardized test scores after participating in a new program.
Frazer High School on the
Fort Peck Reservation Plenty Coups High School on the
Crow Reservation and Lame Deer High School on the
Northern Cheyenne Reservation were among the poorest performing schools.
But as part of the "Schools of Promise" program at the
Office of Public Instruction, tests scores have risen by several percentage points in just one year.
"At first I thought maybe it was going to take a generation," Kenny Smoker, the wellness program director for the Fort Peck Tribes, told The Great Falls Tribune.
The program was funded by a $11.6 million grant from the federal government.
