Cherokee Nation sells plane that was criticized in campaign

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has sold its corporate plane for $1.58 million.

When he was running for principal chief, Bill John Baker criticized the plane as a waste of funds. Now that he's in charge of the tribe, he said he was looking for ways to cut costs.

“The proceeds from the sale of the plane will go directly into Contract Health (Service),” Baker said in a press release. “There is always a real need to better serve the health concerns of the Cherokee Nation, and this sale will help a few more citizens receive desperately needed services.”

The tribe purchased the plane in 2007 for $1.87 million, The Cherokee Phoenix reported.
