Fond du Lac chair wins primary amid harasment accusation

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians held a primary on Tuesday, with incumbent Chairwoman Karen Diver taking the most votes in her bid for re-election.

Diver won 47 percent of the vote. She will face former chair Peter Defoe, who won 21 percent of the vote, in the June 12 election.

Diver's commanding victory comes as she faces a harassment claim. John Henry McMillen, who ran against Diver, claims Diver and her mother threatened and physically assaulted him after he questioned Diver's ancestry.

Carlton County Attorney Thom Pertler viewed surveillance footage of the incident, which took place after Diver delivered the State of the Band address in February. He said it appeared to him that no crime was committed.

Nevertheless, McMillen is seeking restraining orders against Diver and her mother. The judge plans to show the video at a hearing on April 27.
