Navajo Nation man and son killed in shooting in New Mexico

A man from the Navajo Nation and his son were killed in a shooting in Gallup, New Mexico, on Monday night.

Clifton Harper, 39, and Roman Harper, 15, were involved in an altercation with another man at an apartment complex. The man, whom police say is also Navajo, admitted that he shot the victims but that he did it in self-defense.

A memorial for the father and son will be held on the Navajo Nation on Friday, KOB-TV reported.

The incident came on a particularly violent night in Gallup. Another Navajo man was shot in the parking lot of the Gallup Indian Medical Center, an Indian Health Service facility, right after the Harpers were shot. The man was not seriously injured.

Then, a fourth person was shot in the face multiple times with a BB gun at a gas station in Gallup. Soon after, Navajo Nation police reported another BB gun shooting in the parking lot of its casino near Gallup.
