Arizona
Sen. Jack Jackson Jr.
(D) plans to introduce a bill to elevate the
Arizona Commission of Indian Affairs
to a Cabinet-level position.
Jackson, a member of the
Navajo Nation
, said the bill will raise the profile of Indian issues within state government. His idea drew support from tribal leaders at the
17th annual Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day
on Tuesday.
"The resolution itself would plant the seed," said Shan Lewis, vice chairman of the
Fort Mojave Indian Tribe
, The Arizona Republic reported.
New Mexico elevated its Indian Affairs post to the Cabinet level in 2004.
