The Hoopa Valley Tribe of California will start a permitting program for fishermen in response to trespassing, dumping and other issues along the Trinity River.

Last month, Chairman Leonard Masten ordered the tribe to close the gate to the Tish Tang access road. No trespassing signs were also posted, causing concerns among tribal and non-tribal members.

”It's more about education than anything else,” Masten told The Eureka Times-Standard.

Non-members can still access the river but they must enter and exit through U.S. Forest Service land for now while the tribe works on its new program.
