Editorial: Address tribal concerns about park site in Oklahoma





"Plans for renovation of a Fort Gibson park and trail are on hold as government officials determine whether the park is on a Native American burial site.

Michelle Horn, an archaeologist in the Army Corps of Engineers, said historic preservation laws require certain procedures be followed when such concerns arise.

Fort Gibson received a $150,000 grant in May 2010 to resurface about a mile of the historic Jean Pierre Chouteau National Recreational Trail and make improvements at Clinkenbeard Park.

But work hasn’t started."
