Permit rejected for quarry mine at Pechanga Band sacred site

The planning commission in Riverside County, California, voted 4-1 to deny a permit and an exemption for a controversial quarry mine opposed by the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians.

People erupted in cheers at the commission's meeting yesterday, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. But the developer of the Liberty Quarry is planning to appeal to the county board of supervisors.

"I'll believe this is over when this company is gone and out of this community," Chairman Marc Macarro told the paper.

The mine site is next to the reservation. The tribe says it will destroy the sacred Pu`eska Mountain.
