Leaders of Winnemucca Indian Colony seek BIA recognition

A faction of the Winnemucca Indian Colony of Nevada is suing the Obama administration, saying the Bureau of Indian Affairs won't recognize them as legitimate leaders.

Thomas Wasson says a panel of tribal court judges recognized him as chairman. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, in an unpublished opinion, recognized the tribal court decision "on principles of comity."

Despite the court win, the BIA has refused to recognize Wasson. As a result, the tribe can't engaged in daily activities, including operating a business and providing law enforcement on the reservation, according to the lawsuit.

The dispute began when the Wasson faction disputed the legitimacy of William Bills.
