The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California plan to build 143 single-family houses on a 1,400-acre property. The tribe purchased the land in 2010. The tribe hopes to have it placed in trust, either through an act of Congress or through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process. “The federal government controls the timeline, but I really do wish it was yesterday,” Chairman Vincent Armenta said of the tribe's desire to move quickly, The Solvang Valley News reported. The housing will be limited to a 250-acre portion of the site. Anti-Indian groups are hoping to stall the process, claiming the tribe plans to use the land for gaming, which isn't the case.
