Opponents to host meeting to discuss Chumash land-into-trust

Opponents of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California are hosting a meeting to discuss the tribe's land-into-trust bid.

The tribe hasn't filed an application to have 1,400 acres placed in trust. Instead, the tribe approached Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-California) about a legislative acquisition.

The move has opponents worried so they are trying to convince Gallegly there is no local support for the tribe. “We have all been working together to put together this meeting,” Preservation of Los Olivos (POLO) President Kathy Cleary told The Lompoc Record.

POLO is part of a lawsuit against the Bureau of Indian Affairs that claims the Chumash Tribe can't follow the land-into-trust process. The group claims the tribe wasn't "under federal jurisdiction" in 1934.
