Mississippi Choctaws elect Phyliss Anderson as first woman chief

Members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians made history and elected Phyliss J. Anderson as chief on Tuesday.

According to unofficial results, Anderson defeated incumbent Beasley Denson by 1,741 votes to 1,408 votes. She will be the first woman to lead the tribe.

Benson was seeking a second term. He failed to get enough votes in the first election so a run-off was held.
