City seeks meeting with Ho-Chunk Nation on land-into-trust

The city council in Baraboo, Wisconsin, voted to seek a meeting with the Ho-Chunk Nation to ask about the tribe's land-into-trust application.

The tribe wants about 600 acres placed in trust. Officials are worried about the potential loss of property taxes.

"There needs to be some dialogue with the Ho-Chunk Nation," Alderman Dennis Thurow said at a council meeting, The Baraboo News-Republic.

The application dates to 1994 when the tribe initially sought 700 acres. Controversy prompted the tribe to withdraw the request and only five acres went into trust.

The tribe plans to use the land for an IMAX theater, restaurant, cultural heritage center, strip mall and RV park.
