Occupation against development at burial site continues

Native American activists have occupied a burial site northern California for more than four weeks as local officials try to figure out their legal options.

A group called Sacred Sites Protection and Rights of Indigenous Tribes has staged the protest at Glen Cove since mid-April. Activists want to stop the Greater Vallejo Recreation District from disturbing a 3,500-year-old settlement.

The group represents Ohlone, Miwok and other Indian descendants. Three federally-recognized tribes, however, support the project.

The district could go to court to remove the protesters but they say they will respond with a lawsuit of their own.
