California attorney general pressed to protect sacred site

California
Attorney General Kamala Harris
is being asked to stop the construction of a park on top of a sacred site.
Ohlone, Miwok and other descendants don't want a 3,500-year-old settlement in Glen Cove disturbed. Plans call for the
Greater Vallejo Recreation District
and the city of Vallejo to put restrooms on top of a burial site.
"Our ancestors deserve a place where they can rest forever," Corinna Gould, who is Ohlone, told The San Francisco Chronicle. "People everywhere understand that ancient cemeteries are sacred places. But in Vallejo, they want to put a bathroom on one."
The
Sacred Sites Protection and Rights of Indigenous Tribes
believe construction could start as early as today. The group filed a civil rights complaint with Harris, whose office indicated it might be referred to the
California Native American Heritage Commission
.
