Sen. Murkowski requests probe into Alaska Native abuse case

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is again asking the Department of Justice to investigate the failure to prosecute a political figure in connection with the abuse of an Alaska Native girl.

Murkowski asked DOJ's inspector general and the Office of Professional Responsibility to look into the case against Bill Allen, the former CEO of Veco. She said Attorney General Eric Holder has failed to explain why no charges were filed.

"I've done it privately in my office, sitting down with the powers that be, I have done it formally on the record in hearings, I have done it in letters with follow-up phone calls. And the responses I've received have been wholly inadequate," Murkowski told The Anchorage Daily News.

Paula Roberds, who is from a Yup'ik village, said Allen began paying her for sex when she was 15 years old. She said the arrangement continued even after she moved to Washington state.

The state began building a case against Allen but it was put on hold when DOJ prosecuted Allen in a corruption case. The Obama administration declined to pursue charges for sex abuse and refused to provide evidence and other information when the state tried to restart the case.
