Blog: Native Eyes Film Showcase offers top-flight experience
Posted: Wednesday, November 16, 2011
"The holiday movie season is fast approaching, but cinephiles seeking a more unique experience than the latest Hollywood blockbusters might consider heading for Tucson, Arizona. From November 30 to December 4, the Native Eyes Film Showcase features an exciting variety of features and short films by and about Native Americans. Screenings will be held at the University of Arizona and at the nearby Grand Cinema Crossroads. Many are free, and the top ticket price is $5 – you can’t even get popcorn with butter for that.
Many of the movies in this year’s lineup are already decorated veterans of the world’s top film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival. Many of the filmmakers will be in attendance and will host presentations following screenings of their films.
The Native Eyes Film Showcase always boasts a diverse schedule, but this year’s event has attracted entries from around the globe. Representing New Zealand is the critically acclaimed Matariki, a drama about a boy who sets a calamitous chain of events in motion after stealing a car. Also arriving in the Tucson desert is On the Ice, the first feature-length film made in Alaska with an entirely Inuit cast. The coming-of-age drama focuses on two teenagers whose lives are changed after a tragic accident."
