Indian veterans urged to seek tax refunds in New Mexico

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department says it still owes tax refunds to Indian veterans.

Indian veterans who lived on reservations were assessed state income taxes while serving in the military. The practice violated federal law but the veterans weren't told about it.

The state enacted the Native American Veterans’ Income Tax Settlement Fund to facilitate refunds. So far, $825,000 has been paid, the Associated Press reports.

Another $375,00 is available, according to the AP. Indian veterans are urged to contact the Department of Veterans' Services.
