California governor creates special advisor post on Indian issues

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed an executive order on Monday to establish the position of Governor’s Tribal Advisor.

Brown signed the order at a meeting of the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Nations. It cites the "inherent" sovereignty of tribes and the state's desire to work with them on a government-to-government basis.

According to the order, the special advisor will:
• Serve as a direct link between the Tribes and the Governor of the State of California.
• Facilitate communication and consultations between the Tribes, the Office of the Governor, state agencies, and agency tribal liaisons.
• Review state legislation and regulations affecting Tribes and make recommendations on these proposals.

The position is unpaid and has yet to be filled.
