Eastern Cherokees head to the polls to elect chief and council





Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina are heading to the polls today.

Incumbent chief Michell Hicks is seeking a third term in office. His challenger is Patrick Lambert, an attorney who works for the tribe's gaming commission.

Incumbent vice chief Larry Blythe is also running for re-election. Council member Teresa McCoy is hoping to oust him.

Additionally, tribal members will vote for council and school board members.
