A Washington man was charged with vehicular homicide for a drunken driving accident that claimed the life of a member of the Ahousaht First Nation of British Columbia.

Darrell E. Campbell, 49, and his family on their way from B.C. to Washington for the Makah Days celebration. Their vehicle was struck August 25, killing Campbell and injuring two of his relatives.

“My nephew had four children. He was a sober person. He didn’t drink. He was a working man, very independent, and he gave to the community because he worked in the fisheries area," Campbell's aunt, Dawn Campbell, said in court yesterday, The Peninsula Daily News reported.

Authorities say the driver of the other vehicle, Steven W. Boyd, registered a blood alcohol level of 0.12 in a test taken 95 minutes after the accident. Two hours later, he registered 0.08.

The accident occurred on a state highway.
