Utah Gov. Gary Herbert (R) kicked off the 6th annual Native American Summit on Tuesday.

About 400 tribal, state and federal officials are attending the summit. They are hoping to find more ways to work together to address housing, economic development, law enforcement and other issues in Indian Country.

"Tribes and states don't always get along, because you have jurisdictional issues," said Paul Tsosie, the chief of staff for Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk, the Associated Press reported. "This opens the door for state agencies to work with the tribes, instead of against them."

Utah is home to the Ute Tribe, the Paiute Tribe, the Goshute Tribe, the Northwestern Band of Shoshone Nation and the Navajo Nation.
