Attorney General Eric Holder is heading to South Dakota this week to meet with tribal leaders and to visit the Pine Ridge Reservation.

On Wednesday, Holder will be at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn in Rapid City for a joint meeting of the Native American Issues Subcommittee and Attorney General’s Advisory Committee at the Department of Justice. Thirty federal prosecutors, representing states with Indian Country jurisdictions, are attending the meeting.

On Thursday, Holder will go to the Pine Ridge Reservation to participate in the Attorney General Holder’s Conference on Community Safety at the Suanne Big Crow Center, 1 Positive Place, East Highway 18. He will hear from tribal leaders about public safety and domestic violence issues.

Also on Thursday, Holder plans to lay a wreath at the Wounded Knee Memorial Site, at the Junction of BIA Highways 27 & 28, in Wounded Knee.

The visit coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Tribal Law and Order Act. President Barack Obama signed the bill into law at the White House on July 29.

It also comes after DOJ unveiled a proposed bill to combat violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women.
