A canoe discovered near the Alaska Native village of Kasaan may be 500 years old.

The canoe was found on land owned by Sealaska Corp., an Alaska Native regional corporation. It was left there unfinished and was carved using traditional tools.

"Other abandoned canoes have been found in Southeast Alaska, but it is rare to find canoes crafted with traditional tools," Rosita Worl, the president of the Sealaska Heritage Institute, said in a press release.

The location of the canoe is being kept a secret while the village of Kasaan determines how to care for the site and the canoe.
