Posted: Thursday, June 16, 2011
The Greater Chaco Landscape in New Mexico and Bear Butte in South Dakota are among the 11 most endangered historic places, according to the
National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Greater Chaco Landscape is home to ancestral Pueblo communities. Although the Chaco Culture National Historical Park and the Aztec Ruins National Monument are protected by federal law, they face threats from energy development, according to the group.
In South Dakota, Bear Butte also faces threats from energy development. The latest project includes a major oil field close to the sacred mountain.
