Lance Gumbs, a former trustee for the Shinnecock Nation of
New York, was named to the "Power List" by the Long Island Press.
The paper says Gumbs, who recently lost his re-election bid, helped the tribe win federal recognition.
"This long-awaited designation was in no small part due to the unrelenting efforts of Lance Gumbs, a local entrepreneur and former tribal trustee who is largely credited with moving the recognition process to the front burner at the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs," the paper says.
The tribe gained final recognition last October.
