Sac and Fox Nation won't help counties with road projects

The Sac and Fox Nation will no longer provide transportation funds to two counties because they endorsed a controversial highway project.

The tribe opposes the interchange out of fear it will harm cultural events and practices. Tribal members own allotments in the area.

“Through intergovernmental cooperative agreements with state, county and local officials, the Sac and Fox Nation has participated in more than 20 road improvement projects and over 40 bridge reconstruction projects in Pottawatomie, Lincoln and Payne Counties," the tribal council said in a resolution that passed by a unanimous vote, The Oklahoman reported.

Since 1987, the tribe has provided more than $40 million in its Indian Reservation Road funds to local governments.
