Nicholas Redeye, an 89-year-old member of the
Cayuga Nation of New York, will receive the
Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in World War II and Korea.
Redeye was a carrier fighter and torpedo bomber pilot. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 through 1962.
"Lt. Redeye is a highly accomplished fighter pilot, and has been recognized as the only Native American to make 1,000 career landings, as well as the only Cayuga Iroquois to have been a carrier fighter and torpedo bomber pilot in both World War II and Korea,"
Rep. Steve Pearce (R-New Mexico) said in a
press release.
Redeye, whose radio call sign was Cayuga One, will be presented with the award this Thursday in New Mexico.
