Darwin McCoy unexpectedly resigns from chair of Soo Tribe

Darwin "Joe" McCoy unexpectedly resigned as chairman of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians on Tuesday night.

McCoy didn't give a reason for his resignation, the tribe said on its website. But in a letter he cited "circumstances beyond my control."

The tribe will hold a special election to fill the seat. Former chairman Aaron Payment said he will run.

"I have been working on wrapping up my doctorate degree and earning a second masters since leaving office," Payment said in a press release. "I have matured a great deal and would be humbled to have the honor of representing my people once again."

In the meantime, vice chair Lana Causley will serve as chair.
