Leaders of Shiprock Chapter on Navajo Nation pushed to resign

The leaders of the Shiprock Chapter on the Navajo Nation are facing pressure to resign amid concerns about financial mismanagement.

Tribal members want President William Lee, Vice President Donald Benally and Secretary Lula Jackson to step down. If they refuse, members will try to pass a resolution to place the trio on leave.

"We need a change," Larry Jack, who plans to run for chapter president, said at a meeting on Sunday, The Farmington Daily Times reported. "I want to start from ground zero, to get Shiprock to stand up, to build up."

The Navajo Nation Controller has pulled the chapter's checkbook due to financial concerns. The Navajo Auditor General's Office has issued reports that say the chapter has mishandled funds.
