New Mexico
Gov. Susana Martinez
(R) signed into law a bill that designates the squash blossom as the official state necklace.
The squash blossom necklace is common among artists from the
Navajo Nation
and
Zuni Pueblo
. The design, which typically features silver beads and turquoise, dates to the late 1800s, according to
Americana Indian & Western Shows
, an Indian art dealership.
The new law --
SB 109, Official State Necklace
-- takes effect June 17.
