More residents of Puerto Rico identifying as 'American Indian'

Puerto Rico has seen a big jump in the number of residents identifying themselves as "American Indian" on the U.S. Census.

Nearly 20,000 island residents claimed Indian heritage on the 2010 Census. That's up 48.8 percent from the 2000 count.

"We can rewrite ourselves within history," Naniki Reyes Ocasio, a Taino woman, told the Associated Press. "I used to check 'Other' because there was nowhere else I could place myself."

Despite the increase, only 0.5 percent of Puerto Rican residents identify themselves as American Indian or Alaska Native.
