The Navajo Nation is working with two counties in New Mexico to improve law enforcement on the reservation.

The tribe signed agreements with Socorro County and McKinley County. County deputies can be cross-commissioned to enforce criminal and traffic laws on the reservation and appear in tribal court.

"This is a good collaboration with county law enforcement to address ongoing disparities in law enforcement services for frontier areas of the Navajo Nation," Regina Roanhorse, a tribal court administrator, told The Farmington Daily Times. "It will begin a process of addressing the crime rates in the community."

As part of the agreement, county deputies are receiving training in federal Indian law, the Tribal Law and Order Act and Navajo Nation laws.
