Dustin Weber, a member of the
Yurok Tribe of California, died on Friday after being swept away by a post-earthquake tsunami. He was 25.
Weber and some friends were talking pictures of the tsunami near the Klamath River in northern California. He was taken away by a wave and was never recovered despite attempts to find him.
"He was not looking in the direction it was coming from, but they saw it coming," his mother, Lori Davis, told the Associated Press. "They tried to run down there and save him. One of the guys almost had him by the shirt. They couldn't save him."
Weber had recently moved to the reservation from Oregon. He is the first casualty from a tsunami on the West Coast since 1964, the AP report.
