Virginia museum returns Tlingit headdress in first NAGPRA action

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts repatriated a headdress to the Lúkaax.ádi clan of the Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska.

The headdress dates to the the late 19th century and early 20th century. It was the first piece of tribal property the museum returned under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

"It's been such a great experience for everyone and we've made some new friends," assistant curator Lee Anne Chesterfield told The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The museum has other Tlingit and Haida artifacts that it acquired from another institution in Oregon in 1955. No other NAGPRA claims have been made for them at this time, Chesterfield said.
