Alaskans Standing Together, an independent expenditure committee formed by Alaska Native corporations, has raised $595,000 to support the write-in campaign of Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

The group, which also has non-Native supporters, will sped the money on television advertising for Murkowski, a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee and the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Since joining the Senate, Murkowski has become a strong advocate for law enforcement, health care and other needs in rural Alaska Native villages. She also has defended Alaska Native corporations from attacks on their government contracts.

Joe Miller, an attorney who has the backing of the Tea Party movement, won the Republican nomination. He says Alaska Native corporations are targeting him because they don't want people knowing about their "inner workings."
