A developer in California is seeking a federal judge's approval for a "green" housing project at a troubled trailer park on the Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation.
Kenny Dickerson of Palm Desert Masterbuilders wants to build about 300 homes for tenants at the park. He plans to use ICF foam blocks for the houses and solar panels and wind turbines for utility needs.
Dickerson submitted his project to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which will send a recommendation to the judge who has been overseeing the park's numerous health and safety issues. Residents support the idea.
"This is the USA, and there shouldn't be places like this in the USA,” Merejildo Ortiz, the president of the Purepecha Indian Council at the park, also known as Duroville, told The Palm Springs Desert Sun.
The majority of the residents at the park are Purepecha Indians and Hispanic migrant workers from Mexico and Central America.
