The Seneca Nation of New York swore in Robert Odawi Porter as its new president on Tuesday.
Porter, an attorney and professor, promised to diversify the tribe's economy. He said he will make the Seneca government more transparent to members and improve educational opportunities.
"If we are truly to secure the future of the Seneca Nation and the Seneca people, we must start making smarter choices about how we are living our lives and spending our money," Porter said in his induction speech, The Buffalo News reported. "The Nation must diversify if we are to continue on the path of prosperity."
