Members of the Seneca Nation of New York elected Robert Odawi Porter as president of the tribe.

Porter easily defeated Maurice A. John Sr. for the post. The tally was 1,671 to 500.

“Despite all the challenges the Nation faces, I continue to be inspired by the opportunities that lie ahead. We are a strong and vibrant people who have survived repeated efforts to extinguish us,” Porter said in a press release. “We have invaluable treaty protected homelands that continue to give us sustenance. And we still have a defined culture and heritage that make us a unique people in the world.”

Porter has vowed to take a strong stance with the state and the federal government on taxation, gaming and sovereignty issues.
