A cooperative agreement between the Northern Arapaho Tribe and the city of Riverton, Wyoming, is running into local opposition.

Every resident who spoke at a special meeting on Tuesday spoke against the deal, The Riverton Ranger reported. Many said the city doesn't need an agreement to work with the tribe.

“I think we’ve had a lot of cooperation at the city level without all of these agreements,” one former city council member said, according to the paper. “I think it’s best we continue in this manner.”

Some are circulating a petition in hopes of stopping the deal, which addresses zoning, land-use planning, economic development and other issues.

The agreement doesn't address jurisdiction issues. The tribe has long contended that Riverton remains Indian Country.
